On Our Bookshelf: Back to School Picks

Aug 09, 2014 | By Stephanie Singley

top children's classic books

This new school year, sharpen your children’s pencils and sharpen their minds and hearts with a bookshelf full of classic children’s literature that brings the world to their fingertips in imaginatively instructive ways. Beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic, these stories will teach children life lessons that are best learned from the pages of a book. Let them walk with the Ugly Duckling, sit with the Giving Tree, or build their own imaginary town like Roxaboxen.

Roxaboxen by Alice McLerron – When you enter Roxaboxen, enter the imaginations of children. Based on a true story, Roxaboxen is about a group of children and the imaginary community they create together on a small desert hill.

The Giving Tree

the giving tree

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein – Celebrating its 50th year of publication, The Giving Tree is a timeless classic that continues to speak to the hearts of both the young and old about the undying selflessness of true love.

The Ugly Duckling

the ugly duckling

The Ugly Duckling by Jerry Pinkney – Being a child is wonderful, but growing up is hard. The Ugly Duckling is a classic adaptation to bring encouragement and hope to the lives of all children.

Oh, the Places You'll Go

oh the places you'll go

Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss – Starting a new school year, children need a special send off into the world. From kindergartners to high school or college seniors, remind them just how far they can go with a little straight walking and a lot of imagination.

And Then Story Starters (Vol. 1 & 2)

and then story starter vol 1

and then story starter vol 2

And Then Story Starters Vol. 1 & 2 by M.H. Clark – For that extra imaginative child who creates separate stories between the lines of every book, try these story starters. Each volume is comprised of cards with an illustration and the beginning of a story and then...only you and your child will know how it ends.

Go Dog, Go

go dog go

Go, Dog, Go by P.D. Eastman – This beginner reader goes to the dogs. From red dogs and blue dogs to fast dogs and flying dogs, your early reader will learn just how much dogs can do!

Green Eggs and Ham

green eggs and ham

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss – Trying new things is hard and no matter how you slice it, green eggs and ham would be a difficult thing to stomach. This classic story, though, teaches you to keep an open mind and at least try it because who knows, you may, you may like green eggs and ham.

Are You My Mother?

are you my mother

Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman – When a young bird is separated from his mother without ever seeing her, a quest begins to find his long-lost mother. Settle in with your child and follow the adventure as the young bird asks everyone and everything from a dog to a steam shovel, “Are you my mother?”

Baby Singley Gender Reveal Party

Apr 23, 2014 | By

One really exciting and fun thing to do while being pregnant, is finding out weather it's a boy or girl! So of course like any soon-to-be mommy and daddy, we couldn't wait to share in the joy and surprise with our family and friends by throwing a reveal party! And now, we want to share with all our fabulous customers our fun party pictures and exciting news!

The Invitation

So first thing first, we had to come up with a theme that would be introduced through our invitation. After much searching online and Pinterest, we decided that we loved the idea of little boy and girl silhouettes.

Now that we were set on the silhouette theme, we jumped right in to making that theme flow throughout our decorations. We liked the idea of "more is less" when it came to decorations and color scheme. I didn't want to go the traditional pink and blue route, so I was thrilled when the 2 colors of yellow and turquoise paired so nicely together.

How To Reveal?

We pondered over the how-to-reveal part of the party for a while and we knew we did not want to find out at the ultrasound because we thought it would be oh so fun to share in that moment with our closest friends and family. There are so many cute and creative ideas out there, and we were just so excited to find out! We love cupcakes (who doesn't?) and so we knew we wanted to include cupcakes in the reveal. But instead of every cupcake being filled with the gender colored icing, we thought it would be so funny if only 1 of the cupcakes had the gender colored icing in it. And boy (or girl!) did that sure add to the suspense as everyone bit into their cupcake!

Team Boy or Team Girl?

Before we dove into our cupcakes, we gave everyone one last chance to cast their vote using either a boy silhouette or a girl silhouette. It was so fun to see what everyone's guesses were!

The Big REVEAL!

We are tickled PINK with joy over our baby girl! Not it's time to go shopping!
