Clutter Control

Apr 27, 2011 | By
Do you find yourself constantly tripping over clutter that belongs upstairs? From what we've witnessed, items that belong upstairs all too often find themselves downstairs and vice verse. Ballard Design has a clever way to fix that for you.

May we introduce you to the "On the Way Up Basket":

Rattan Step Basket
Ballard Designs

This handy and stylish basket is designed to sit comfortably at the bottom of your stairs and collect the "junk" that actually belongs upstairs. We think it's equally as clever to put  a basket at the top of the stairs too so all of those out of place items can find their way back downstairs.

When a family member heads either up or down, they simple grab the basket and deposit the items in their rightful spot!

Now if there was only a clever, handy way to train your children and husband...

Good Luck!

It's A...

Girl? Boy? Are you dying to know? How about revealing the gender of the baby at a "gender reveal party"?

It's the latest trend and it's gaining momentum as more and more couples opt to share the news at a party devoted especially to the baby. Any excuse for a celebration, right?!

If you're planning on throwing a gender reveal party there are few things you need to know so you can plan the perfect surprise. We just finished throwing a reveal party for Megan, one of the gals at Bella Vita (it's a girl, by the way!), so here's what we learned:

gender reveal party invitation
Find cute invites. Make sure to keep them gender neutral so you don't put ideas into anyone's head! We used Tiny Prints and were very happy with the service and designs.

reveal party cupcakes
The biggest thing is probably deciding how to reveal the gender. One idea is to have a cake baked with either a pink or blue center and when mom and dad cut into it everyone will get to see the outcome. Another way (and our favorite!) is to have cupcakes made that are pink or blue inside. That way, everyone at the party gets to bite into their own cupcake and find out the gender.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure the icing is a gender-neutral color so it doesn't give away the surprise! We favored green, yellow and orange. But turquoise and red would be good colors to throw into the mix as well.

If you're throwing the party (or in charge of the cake/cupcakes) make sure mom and dad give you the envelope from the ultrasound. The doctor should have written the gender (or included an ultrasound picture) for mom and dad to give to you. Note to moms and dads: don't peek during the ultrasound! You wouldn't want to ruin your own surprise!

Mom and Dad Reveal
The longer you keep the guests waiting, the more suspenseful it becomes! Plan a couple of games that require the guests to choose sides. Have them hold up pictures of the mom or dad as a baby so they can show what "team" they are on, or have them write baby names to declare their team.

Lastly, make sure you have someone working the camera and video. You won't want to forget mom and dad's reaction when they bite into their cake!

We love the idea of a gender reveal party because it builds the same level of surprise and excitement as waiting until the baby is born...but without the waiting part!

Happy party planning!

Designing the Nest

Trying to decide how to plan your nursery? You're mind might be over flowing with ideas, or you might be void of all creative inspiration...but either way you have roughly 9 months to get your nursery done. Seems like a long time...until you actually get to doing it!

To help you hit the ground running we've come up with a few nursery's that are creative, classy, modern and transitional. Make a list of what you love (and hate), narrow it down to "girl", "boy" or "neutral" and find that one piece that sets off the entire room. Some items that are perfect as inspiration pieces: crib bedding, glider upholstery, artwork, rug or fabric swatch (curtains, perhaps?)!

And, as always, bring your inspiration (or lack thereof) to Itty Bitty Bella and we'll help you pull together the perfect look using as much or as little time as you have!

Our favorite nursery? Maybe! The horizontal stripes are the perfect touch to a neutral color scheme and add interest without going bright and bold. And how cute is that pillow? (Hint, we've got it at Itty Bitty Bella!). With a couple color swaps this nursery would be ideal for either a boy or a girl.

Don't be afraid of using bold color and even bolder accents. Go ahead and get creative with your child's nursery...for a couple reasons: 1. They can't tell you they don't like it. 2. They're only a baby for a little while, so you don't have to feel guilty when you feel like changing directions and 3. You're the mom!

If bright, bold walls are not your thing (hate to paint?) then infuse the nursery with color and creativity using accent pieces that are not only easy to apply, but easily replaced when you're ready to update. We love how this family kept it "girly" with the salmon pink, but popped some unexpected yellow and orange to brighten things up!

If neutrals are your thing, and you just can't bring yourself to step outside your box, consider the nursery above. Classic, clean and simple. A plus to a neutral nursery? You're killing two (or more) birds with one stone because the colors, finishes and even some furniture can grow with your baby for years to come. Not a bad idea...

Sometimes finding cute ahem, manly, boy themes and products can be challenging. So when we see a well done nursery such as this- all boy,  a little edgy, and that can grow with them for a few years- we're all eyes! We love the pops of color, the clean lines and not-so-baby bedding and decor.

Does this help? We sure hope so! Feel free to ask us any questions along the way.
