Rock-A-Bye Baby

Apr 05, 2011 | By
Are you feeling overwhelmed with all of the expenses that come with having a new baby...especially since your baby is still 9 months away from entering the world?! You can take a little bit of comfort in knowing you're not alone, everyone feels that way, but no matter what we understand that it's still scary!

Now, more than ever before it's important to focus on quality, longevity, and investment. This baby, and maybe more to come, are going to be a part of your life for well...the rest of your life! The items you purchase now have the potential to grow with your children and stand the test of time. If you purchase correctly, that is.

While some nursery items are meant to be replaced or updated with each child, some items can be with your growing family for as long as you want. Chances are you'll tire of them long before they wear out or need replacing. Your rocker/glider chair is one of those items.

Invest now in a quality, well made rocker and you'll thank us later...at 4:00am. Countless times we have mother's come in and tell us about their rocker. They either bought one quickly without looking at the details and hate it now (squeaks when it rocks, shaky, hurts their back!) or we have mother's come choose our hand built, made in the USA rockers and love them.

The deep feather and down stuffed cushions, the plush back and arms, and the smooth glide all make early morning feedings that much better. Not to mention story time, cuddle time and eventually "grandmother time" more comfortable and enjoyable.

Are you thinking that you won't want the same upholstery for years to come? Well don't worry mom, we've got you covered. Each of our rockers come with 2 options: upholstered or slip covered. That's right- a slipcover. You can select the fabric, pattern and color you want at that very instant, and order a new slipcover (instead of an entirely new chair!) when you're ready for baby #2, or a move to the living room.

When it comes time to outfit your nursery, don't overlook the investment pieces. Do your homework and make sure you are 100% satisfied with your purchase. Nursery furniture takes  a lot of wear and tear...make sure it's in it for the long haul!

It's A...

Girl? Boy? Are you dying to know? How about revealing the gender of the baby at a "gender reveal party"?

It's the latest trend and it's gaining momentum as more and more couples opt to share the news at a party devoted especially to the baby. Any excuse for a celebration, right?!

If you're planning on throwing a gender reveal party there are few things you need to know so you can plan the perfect surprise. We just finished throwing a reveal party for Megan, one of the gals at Bella Vita (it's a girl, by the way!), so here's what we learned:

gender reveal party invitation
Find cute invites. Make sure to keep them gender neutral so you don't put ideas into anyone's head! We used Tiny Prints and were very happy with the service and designs.

reveal party cupcakes
The biggest thing is probably deciding how to reveal the gender. One idea is to have a cake baked with either a pink or blue center and when mom and dad cut into it everyone will get to see the outcome. Another way (and our favorite!) is to have cupcakes made that are pink or blue inside. That way, everyone at the party gets to bite into their own cupcake and find out the gender.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure the icing is a gender-neutral color so it doesn't give away the surprise! We favored green, yellow and orange. But turquoise and red would be good colors to throw into the mix as well.

If you're throwing the party (or in charge of the cake/cupcakes) make sure mom and dad give you the envelope from the ultrasound. The doctor should have written the gender (or included an ultrasound picture) for mom and dad to give to you. Note to moms and dads: don't peek during the ultrasound! You wouldn't want to ruin your own surprise!

Mom and Dad Reveal
The longer you keep the guests waiting, the more suspenseful it becomes! Plan a couple of games that require the guests to choose sides. Have them hold up pictures of the mom or dad as a baby so they can show what "team" they are on, or have them write baby names to declare their team.

Lastly, make sure you have someone working the camera and video. You won't want to forget mom and dad's reaction when they bite into their cake!

We love the idea of a gender reveal party because it builds the same level of surprise and excitement as waiting until the baby is born...but without the waiting part!

Happy party planning!

Going Glass

Apr 02, 2011 | By
Glass bottles were all the rage...back in 1932! Soon they were replaced by their lighter, less expensive,  more durable plastic counterparts. Or were they?

Glass bottles were still sold and manufactured all throughout the world even after plastic bottles came to the market and seemly overtook homes of new mothers everywhere. Just when we all figured out which bottles did what, what plastics were good, which were bad and which liners our babies liked best science quickly showed us we are back to square one. Literally. We're back to traditional glass bottles.

(4 oz glass bottles with shock-resistant silicone sleeve)

Why? In recent years plastic has been put under the microscope. Besides getting a bad rap from environmentalists and good citizens everywhere for the damage it causes to our environment, it's been tested, retested and, tested some more for harmful chemicals. Studies have shown that harmful chemicals can leach out of the plastic when heated making the plastic baby bottle unsafe for your itty bitties.

In case you need a little more convincing, here's some additional reasons mother's everywhere are turning to glass bottles:

  • They keep contents warmer/colder longer than regular plastic bottles
  • They can be easily sterilized in the dishwasher or with boiling water
  • The glass does not absorb smells or tastes (so if you forget a milk  bottle lying around the house the the bottle won't smell like moldy milk once you clean it out!)
  • Glass bottles give off no after tastes like plastic bottles do.
  • They can last forever! Unless you break or chip them, there is no need to replace them.
That last point is a concern for a lot of mother's and may be the only reason preventing you from making the switch. While broken or chipped glass is a concern, it can be avoided. Our glass bottles come snug in a silicone shock-resistant sleeve that prevents them from breaking, even when dropped on concrete.

Don't believe us? Watch this!

If you want to conduct this little experiment for yourself, feel free to stop by and give it a try!

Capture the Moment

Mar 31, 2011 | By
They're only young once...

It goes by so fast...

Where did the time go...

If I could only freeze time...

Do you find yourself muttering at least one of these ever-popular phrases these days? The time spent with your babies and children seem to last but an instant, and wouldn't it be great if you could capture those moments and preserve your favorite memories for a lifetime.

Thanks to our technology savvy era, you can use your digital camera or even your phone to take hundreds of pictures a day (literally, if you wanted to!) of your favorite family moments whether big or small.

Those precious moments are better kept out on display than stored deep in the computer or buried in a keepsake box. They are better kept out where you can see them, memorize them and relive them each time you pass them in the hall or notice them in a bedroom.

You can never have too many memories. Vacations, a trip to the park or a lazy day spent at home all deserve a place in your memory, a spot on your wall.  Go ahead and group frames together and college different moments. Try placing a row of frames in your hallway with a family picture for each year so you can look back and see how you've grown and changed.

Frames make great shower gifts too, especially frames that are full of style and charm. How wonderful would it be for baby to look back 20, 30, or 40 years down the road and have the picture and frame from their nursery.  What a great way to capture the moment and freeze time!
